MARY RICHARDSON’S IRISH BREAD

1-cup whole-wheat flour
1 cup white flour
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp cream of tartar
1-cup milk (about)
2 oz. or 4 Tbsp butter or margarine
½ tsp baking soda

Mix dry ingredients together. Cut in butter or margarine till crumbly. Add as much milk as necessary to make dough that is easy to handle but not sticky. Knead by hand on a floured board until smooth. Flatten into a circle about 1 ½ inches thick. Cut an X across the surface and transfer dough to lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in preheated oven at 350 for 50 minutes.
